I can tell you why some folks hate 5 guys after reading reviews then trying them. It's a chain style burger. Not a fancy restaurant, thick burger you are going to pay ten dollars for. IT IS, however, the best burger in State College! Yep, it's messy. Yep, it's a chain, but this is not McD's or BK. This is a great, quick burger. The guys that work at this location are so NICE. yes, the fries are greasy. If you get them and are not happy, let them know. I've had their fries time after time and they are like crack. You can't eat one or two. Heaven! But one time I did get a bag of fries from a different location and they were not fresh. I asked them for a fresh batch and there it was...perfect, like home made, perfection. Stop in and say Hi to Alvin. He will fix you up!

What a freaking gem. Stop what you're doing right now and make your way down to 5 guys. It's the best place to get a burger in all of state college, and probably the most reasonably priced. It's always clean, the service is always friendly, and the food is as fresh as it can be. Gotta go.

I'm not sure where some of the hate for Five Guys comes from in these reviews, but they generally mention minor details instead of talking about the quality of the food itself. Any ways, I've been to this location three times now in 2014. Each of those visits was exceptional. Even my wife likes this Five Guys over ones she has been to in DC. Pros: 1.) Great burgers, always cooked near-perfectly. This place cranks out burgers, so their line cooks seem to get it right each time. Juicy and tender, yet well done. 2.) Made just the way you want it. They've never missed any topping I requested on my burger. 3.) They say our eyes are bigger than our stomachs. And in this case, that's very true: more fries than most people can eat. In fact, one order of fries is plenty for 2-3 people. And the fries are freshly made on top of that. They don't soak them enough to remove the extra starches, hence why they brown so much, but they're delicious nonetheless. 4.) A regular burger order is two patties. Plenty even for me. 5.) They give free, boiled, in-shell peanuts. As much as you want. And considering how many fries you get, you really don't eat that many any ways. Cons: 1.) Sometimes noisy atmosphere, with a bad echo. When it's not too busy in the summer time, this is fine. When the students are swarming here, it can get loud. Very loud. Get your food to go during Penn State semesters. 2.) Napkins. They have a little stack at the counter where you pick up the food. Nothing on the tables or in dispensers. So you have to grab a big stack there. The burgers can get REALLY messy. I suppose that's part of the fun, but they simply don't wrap them enough, nor give you enough to wipe up that dripping mess. If you have kids, don't forget the pile of napkins and wet wipes you'll need. 3.) Seating. If you sit in the area closer to the exit, you'll either freeze or burn up depending upon the season. Sit further inside.

I don't like burgers. In fact, I only eat them once or twice a year. With that said, Five Guys impressed me. My order came out quick and correct. The meat was cooked to perfection. It was done, but still juicy. The topping were good, too. The fries were excellent. They were fresh, boardwalk style fries with a good seasoning on top. One order was enough for 2 people. Lastly, I was totally dazzled by the soda machine. It's a touch screen that allows you put flavorings in your soda find options according to taste, caffeine content, etc. Oh, and there's even a small parking lot, if you're lucky enough to get a spot!

My favorite fast food burger in State College. Better than the burger at some "real restaurants". Note that this is NOT a pretty burger. It is a big, greasy, messy pile of deliciousness. Pair that with some fries (regular or Cajun), and you need a nap after lunch. They are pricier than a McDonalds or Burger King, but definitely better.

If you are a Vegan with Bad Cholesterol and a peanut allergy... Five Guys is not the place for you... (full disclosure if you ARE in fact a vegan with bad cholesterol and a peanut allergy I WILL take you out for dinner, we'll find a place that works) Any meat loving, peanut cracking man or woman will love Five Guys. Five Guys has mastered the simple things in life- a burger and fries made to near perfection. For $10 and some change I had a Cheese Burgher "All the Way" (basically a burger with all the classic toppings) and regular fries. As you may know, Five Guys is famous for their generous servings of fries- they dump a whole scoop in your bag. This place is the real deal and although they could be considered a fast food chain restaurant, the quality and taste of the food surpasses any doubts. The State College Five Guys has ample seating and a VERY friendly staff. The guys working are really chill and always friendly. I get the feeling that they actually like what their doing. The workers are a burger-making, fry-scooping machine. At any given time, even with a long, 8 person deep line, they are dishing out orders made exactly the way you ask. Next time you are on West College Ave, and looking for a place to grab a meal, walk PAST Starbucks and stop in Five Guys. Who needs a Pumpkin Spice Latte and a bagel when you can have a burger, fries, and peanuts?

Five guys has the best burgers in town. It is not cheap, if you want cheap don't come here. If you want good food, that is probably not so good for you, but great food come here. The burgers are made just right and you can get as many topping as you would like. The small fry is also plenty enough for two people. What they like to do is make you think they put a ton of fries in the cup so it spills over into the bag. In reality they just dump a bunch of fries in the bag. A great marketing technique, I will give them that.

My first Five Guys experience was in Chesapeake VA. I have eaten Five Guys up and down the East Coast and every single time I have been completely satisfied. The greatest thing about Five Guys is their consistency. The same Five Guys I ate in FL is the same I have eaten in PA. The toppings are all free, and the same from place to place. Heck with Ruby Tuesday or Red Robin, Five Guys is the best burger joint out there now. Can't talk about Five Guys without mentioning their fantastic french fries!!! Fresh cut, fried in Peanut Oil, then covered in an awesome Cajun (or plain) seasoning... YUM! A small order will serve two people easily!!! Two other things to note. They have free shelled peanuts to munch on, and they have the new Coke machines that give you hundreds of options. I prefer the Peach Mello Yellow Zero myself. All in all, if you see a Five Guys anywhere, you know exactly what you are getting, and it is an awesome time!

There is no better place for a burger, on this earth. Period. The soda fountain of infinite options is also pretty cool.

I went here after hearing all this hype about how great the burgers were, only to be sorely disappointed. I got a regular burger with all the toppings: the 'fresh' mushrooms were fresh all right, fresh from a CAN! Everything was mushy! I ate it because it was going to be the only thing I could eat that day and I wanted something filling. They also give you half the bag's worth of overly greasy fries, which, for the price you pay for the meal, makes up in volume what the meal lacked in taste. I ended up trashing 3/4 of the fries because of the MASSIVE indigestion and heartburn I could feel welling up. Maybe it was just this location and not all 5 guys are bad, I'm still holding out for that nirvana-like burger experience I was led to believe existed here.

Nooo...WHY in the world does this have 4.5 stars and the number two spot in "Best of State College"? I love burgers. I've eaten lots of excellent burgers, and a couple that were even worthy of 5 stars. Five Guys does NOT serve a 5-star burger. It serves a generic fast food burger. It's better than McDonald's or Burger King or Wendy's, but is that really an accomplishment? And, to be honest, I prefer McDonald's fries. The only reason I've ever willingly ate at a Five Guys was because I worked in a mall that had one in the foodcourt. And if you've ever worked in a mall, you know how low your standards will drop when it's finally your turn for break. Oh, Happy Valley...your questionable taste will forever be a mystery...

Now, I hate to be the party pooper but I'll just add that Five Guys isn't a place where you should go all the time. Here's their nutritional info: net.fiveguys.com/files/f… That's right. - one large order of french fries: 1464 calories. - one bacon cheeseburger (without toppings): 920 calories. But eh, I'm all for responsibility under full information. If you gain 20 pounds over five guys, at least it'll be fricking delicious. I love 5 guys.

Getting over a hangover? Or just craving the greasiest and dense meal of your life? Come right here! I've been to Five Guys all over this country and I honestly don't have anything bad to say about them because the food's essentially the same, so it comes down to the attitudes of the workers. The one here at State College is pretty laid-back and welcoming. I love the amount of fries they give you. I always order one meal of regular size and split it with two others and we are always satisfied.

3.75 stars. I must say it was pretty good, but a bit expensive. Free mushrooms = awesome. I got a cheeseburger with "everything" which cost about $6 after tax. I think there was probably somewhere between 1/3 lb to 1/2 lb of meat in there, but it seemed rather small for some reason.. maybe it was just cause I was extra hungry at the time. I was still kinda hungry after the burger, but I didn't want to spend $3 on fries...

Best fast food burger in State College. Despite all the college students, and the densely packed downtown area, it's tough to find a quick burger in State College. It seems like every other restaurant is pizza (case in point with the Sarina's right next door). Luckily, tucked away near the West side of campus on College Ave, there is Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Like all good burger places, their menu is brief. They have burgers, they have hotdogs, they have fries. They have plenty of toppings for all of them, and they give you healthy (read: heaping) servings. The fries are some of the best I've ever had, very freshly cut (they have a sign that tells you where that day's potatoes come from). Also, the burgers are a cut above other fast food joints like McDonald's and Wendy's. It's a well-known fact that the only difference between a large and a small fry is the size of the cup they throw in the bag after they fill it, so save yourself a few cents by buying the smaller size. Also, the only difference between a regular burger and a little one is that the regular has two patties. Being a burger chain with a strong reputation, there's something of a rivalry between Five Guys fans and In-n-Out fans. Being a West Coaster, I'm siding with In-n-Out...so I give this place 4 stars.

Disclaimer: This is not healthy food. You will consume more calories and fat than any reasonable person should consume in one sitting. The fries will give you nearly as much saturated fat as the burger (maybe more if they give you lots of fries in the bag). The two combined will give you more saturated fat than you should be consuming over a several day span. That said, if you are looking for one of the best burgers around, Five Guys has it. We don't eat here often, but when we do we're always happy with the food. The burgers are really good, they always "hit the spot." The burgers aren't so greasy that we can't enjoy them, although sometimes I feel the fries are (If we take them home, by the time we get there the brown bag is literally soaked in grease, which is unappetizing in my opinion). I can't suggest Five Guys for a regular meal, because it's just not good for you, but if you're looking for a guilty indulgence they have the best burger in State College.

Tried FiveGuys Burgers for the first time. Was impressed with the taste and quality of both the burger and hot dog (thought the hotdog was not Chicago style it still had lots of trimmin's) Cajun Fries were not much better than the regular fries, so I will likely stick with the regulars. Probably not great to go to regularly, but for a once and a while treat, I'd go back!

Funny place! They had a big box of peanuts...take a handful and have with your burger. Got to love it. They have a little cup for the shells. Ordered a bacon cheese burger. Got a bacon burger. Forgot the mayo, forgot the cheese! Come on! It is not that hard and the place was not busy. Like the simple menu of burgers, fries and dogs, as well as some of the topping options including grilled mushrooms, jalapeno peppers, B-B-Q sauce. The burger was good. The fries were very good and you get a boat load in a regular order!

My favorite burger joint. The burgers are so freakin good, I always want another one. When you order fries, they always throw an extra scoop in the bag for you so you always have enough. You pretty much can't go wrong with anything you would order so enjoy

If you have been to a big city 5 guys you may be sad. This place is hit or miss. The staff seems to turn over far to often and the food suffers. I have had very good meals and also some pretty marginal ones, the fries seem to suffer the most. My first experience with 5 guys was in the city and it was excellent. If I had not had this early memory I would never go back. They are a bargain in the city, but in a college town like state college there are a bunch of comparably priced places that have better food.

There's nothing complex about this place - it's a chain that does made-to-order burgers and fries. Then again, if this isn't so complex, why can't other burger places can never seem to get it right? Five Guys is by far my most favorite fast food place in State College. They do everything right and don't cut corners. Their prices are a bit high, but after your meal you never walk away unsatisfied. You can spend $7 on a value meal from McDonalds just down the road, or you can spend a few bucks extra at Five Guys and be rewarded with a fresh and juicy made-to-order burger with nearly unlimited options for toppings. Also, it's worth it to mention that the employees here are awesome. They are extremely polite and appreciative of your business, and make the visit that much better.

You walk in and a sign on the wall tells you where the potatoes you are about to eat came from...NICE! Burgers are tasty, tons of options to put on them, no extra charge for most...fries are delicious and they have malt vinegar all around... And while you wait for your food, help yourself to the peanuts... Warning...when they say burger, there are two patties of meat on it! Go for the little ones for one patty.

Because of how unhealthy this place is, I have to make it a rule to not eat here more than once a week. But any food that unhealthy, well, you know it's got to be good! The little bacon cheeseburger "all the way", now that's got my name written all over it. I can taste the freshness in the ingredients and love how the mushrooms aren't even an ingredient they flinch about. But if you really need a burger. You really need a burger that will fill you up and make you very, very happy in the moment? Go here. Bonus is that fries and a drink will still land you in the $10 area--yet the burgers here are better than any of the other places on that College Ave. strip. So you'll see me here on Wednesday afternoons. It's a weekly ritual. Because yes, it is that good.

Fresh cut fries, greasy delicious burgers with your choice of toppings. A fun burger place. Not healthy in the least bit but you will enjoy your meal.

I don't get why so many people like this place so much? The bun isn't even toasted. 2 stars for the burger. Two things they got wrong when I went there: 1) They charged me for a drink when I didn't get one. 2) I ordered it with bacon and didn't get it. I got my refund for the drink, but I had already left by the time I opened up my bag to eat my baconless burger. If you like Fatburger, you'll like Five Guys. They're pretty similar in my opinion. The quality of the meat isn't the best, and all of those toppings make it a drippy burger. They do get an extra star for their fries, though. Their fries are SPECTACULAR, and the only reason why I would return to Five Guys. They're crispy and hot, and the cajun seasoning gives it a great kick.

Yeah, it's a fast food chain. But it is most likely the best fast food chain in the world, and it's lucky we've got one downtown. You can snack on peanuts while you wait for your burger. You can find out where the potatoes for that day's fries come from--it's on the chalkboard. You can relax: no trans fats, those potatoes were sliced fresh and fried (twice; this is important!) in peanut oil. You won't have a choice how you want your burger done, but it will be juicy enough, with a nicely caramelized crust. You will be able to choose a few toppings to go between your meat and your nondescript but sturdy bun, which are not that impressive, but flavorful and acceptable. You will leave very, very full, and not too much poorer. On the whole, it puts every other burger in downtown State College to shame. Since ingredients are not exceptional, I docked a star. Since those fries are unusually perfect (you gotta fry them twice, all you other assholes!) I gave it back.

I've been there three times since the first visit. The burgers are unbelievable and delicious. These are like real burgers and may even be better than the ones my family does on the grill during the summer. The come in two sizes little and regular. The little ones are a regular burger while the regular size are a huge burger with two patties. They have real lettuce, good cheese, fresh onions, the works. And the fries? If you order a large fry you're ridiculous. Just get a regular sized as they always fill up your bag with extra fries that are more than enough for three people. I took my girlfriend and paid 11 dollars and was absolutely stuffed with fries and burgers, and we still had leftovers. I think I'm well within my rights to say that this is the best burger I have ever had in a restaurant, and really inexpensive as well. No Tip because you get your order up front which is a bonus for me. Music can be a little loud depending on what time it is. Late at night its usually louder while not so much during the day. Also all you can eat peanuts.

THE place for take-out burgers in State College, forget Backyard. Fries so good I haven't had anything close since I was a kid, burgers with two patties standard, and everything made to order for under ten bucks. Get what you can before Chronic Town tries to burn it down again.

Five guys is a chain. It's a small but growing chain of burger joints that started in the Washington DC area. But each location is unique, and it doesn't look like a chain. These guys do three things -- burgers, fries, and hot dogs. I am not a big hot dog eater, but I LOVE Five Guys Burgers and Fries. They use fresh ground beef for their burgers. A regular is two patties; a junior is one patty. They have plenty of choices on fresh toppings. The burgers are made when you order them, so there is always a short wait for your food. But they have peanuts in the shell to munch on while you wait. And their fries! Fresh cut, cooked to perfection, and slightly salted. And they have malt vinegar that you can take to your table for a little added zing. These fries put MacDonalds, Wendys, etc. fries to shame. For a reasonable price, this place rocks. If you have a burger craving, you'll want to go to Five Guys!

I'm glad to see that State College at least has a small taste of DC... even if it is just the burgers. Fresh beef, fresh potatos, and incredibly fast service in comparison to other locations. Definitely a staple of any diet!

My favorite burger joint in State College. Unlimited toppings and tons to choose from is the main draw. Fries are really good as well. Usually not crowded, but always pretty busy. Good for takeout as they're usually pretty fast. Peanuts while you wait.

When it comes to fast-food burgers, there really is no option that comes close. We're talking fresh burgers, not that frozen crap that other fast-food restaurants will try and serve. The fries are also very fresh, and VERY good. I know many people who actually prefer the fries to the burger itself, and that is saying something. If you are starving when you get there, and can't wait the 4 minutes for your meal, then snack on some peanuts.

First time I went to a Five Guys in Minneapolis, I couldn't believe it was a chain. State College's franchise is just as good as the rest. When all you want is a burger and some fries, quick and inexpensive, like you'd get at a sit-down diner, this is the place to go. I wish it wasn't so close to where I work.

I wish I knew five guys that could make me burgers like this!! And all of their fries are made from fresh potatoes every day and they even tell you where those potatoes are from!! I mean, true, you never really care what state your potatoes come from, BUT it is a little added bonus to know that little fact here! Kind of gives you food lovers out there who are nerds about knowing things about food, a little home inside of five guys ha ha. Their burger patties are thick and fresh and juicy, and if you are a breakfast lover and come here for one of their amazingly tasty tasty breakfast sandwiches, for $1 more you can add a whole burger patty to it! Granted, I could not eat that much for breakfast, but for those of you out there that can, all of their sandwiches are made fresh to order, and you can add onto it as many of their toppings that they have as you want for free!!! And they say the best things in life are free!!! So my breakfast sandwich was around $4.50 which doesn't come with coffee or hashbrowns or anything which sounds kinda pricey considering how cheap breakfast combo meals are everywhere in the world, but this sandwich would be the king of breakfast sandwiches in my book--egg, cheese, bacon with tomatoes, green peppers, onions and jalapenos!! Mmmmmm what a way to start off my day and this sandwich definitely kept me full for quite some time since it was so big!! My only problem, was the bread wasn't quite strong enough or thick enough or something to hold all of the goodness inside, but hey, that just means more licking of your fingers! Hive five to Five Guys!

I typically get stuck ordering and picking up lunch for the majority of the guys i work with. These guys are always very easy to deal with and willing to work with me whenever I'm in a hurry. oh and they make good food too (burgers).
